A Bath in Bath?

Shane and I decided that we would head off to Bath for the weekend.... so we packed up Rove and headed West! Bath is near Bristol or Wales for those that dont know where Bristol is! The town itself is famous for the 'healing waters' and is the only place with thermal pools in the whole of the UK... next closest hot pool - Iceland! So hence the idea to have a 'Bath in Bath'. The town is very very quaint and like the rest of England has heaps of history! Basically every man and his prehistoric pet has spent some time in Bath! There are alsorts of history snipets on display from the iron age to the celts to the romans. What we didnt realise is that just turning up was not the best idea during their music festival weekend and didn't guarentee accommodation... whoops!
We made the most of our day though and jumped on a city tour which proved very interesting.... there is alsorts of amazing architecture and the town is on the River Avon. The highlight had to be finding out where sayings such as 'Saved by the Bell' and 'Daylight Robbery' came from....

We then went to Bath Abbey for a nosey... it is an amazing church! Everything was so ornate and intricately designed... We spent a little time marvelling at how the builders would have managed to create the church all of those hundreds of years ago...
Next stop was the Roman Bath, we cruised around the ruins and looked at the bath set up used by the ancient romans and also the temple of worship that was next door. There were a number of chambers that created the bathing site and hot spring water flowed through these creating different bathing areas and temperatures for steam rooms etc. The design is incredible - there is no doubt that the romans were sophisticated engineers, the drainage system etc that they created is still working after 2000 years! We left the complex and were given some of the spring water to drink on the way out... lets just say this was designed for bathing not drinking! Yuck!
Just a note - Daylight Robbery was used because there used to be a window tax in place for house with more than 6 windows, therefore they painted the windows on some walls to get the effect without the tax..... Saved by the Bell was used because people were sometimes buried alive so they would tie a cord around the arm of the deceased and have a bell above ground attached... if the bell rang then someone started digging!
